Comparing Compaction Ratios or Volume Reductions in Industrial Compactors
Tech Oil Products provides compactors, balers, and other compaction and recycling equipment to diverse industries all over the world. With over 29 years of experience in the engineering and manufacturing of waste and recycling equipment, Enviro-Pak® consultants recognize a need to educate our customers on how to make good decisions when selecting a manufacturer for their trash compaction and recycling needs.
Frequently, our customers are presented with proposals for a compactor or baler offering extremely high compaction ratios and volume reduction. Many times, compactors are advertised with misrepresented compaction ratios which falsely promise an exaggerated volume reduction. For greater understanding of compaction force and volume reduction, please see our examples:
|
EXAMPLE 1: |
| Claim |
80:1 Compaction Ratio or Volume Reduction |
| Specifications |
Compaction Chamber is 80 ft3 |
| Waste |
A single cardboard box is placed inside the chamber and occupies the entire volume. |
| Result |
Compaction reduces the box to 1" which is equal to 1.33 ft3. |
| The Truth |
Compaction ratio or volume reduction of 60:1 (80 ÷ 1.33 = 60) |
|
EXAMPLE 2: |
| Claim |
80:1 Compaction Ratio or Volume Reduction |
| Specifications |
Compaction Chamber is 80 ft3 |
| Waste |
A Stack of phone books fills the chamber. |
| Result |
Compaction does not reduce the books at all because no air can be removed from the books. |
| The Truth |
Compaction ratio or volume reduction is ZERO. |
Therefore, the most effective way to estimate your compaction ratio or volume reduction is to compare the FORCE of the compactors being considered, as well as the estimated volume of air that can be removed from the waste. In the two examples of above, the same compaction equipment can produce a 60:1 compaction ratio, but it can also produce NO volume reduction due to the type of waste being compacted.
The compactor with the greatest force over the same compaction chamber area will yield the highest compaction ratio.
